Dear Editor:

I am contacting you in regards to the proposed “Controlled Burn” that the US Forest Service is proposing in the canyon directly south of Placitas and the San Antonio de las Huertas land Grant.

The decision by the Forest service is intended to come July 1st, and such a burn could seriously affect the area in the Palo Duroso Canyon where NM 165 leaves the paved area and passes Sandia Man Cave and heads up toward the Sandia Ski Area.

The proposed area and map that the FS has provided shows a simple burn area intended that surrounds and includes the Palomas Park Estates Area, the southerly portion of Placitas, and runs close to the La Madera, Mountain View Acres-Sandia Park and San Pedro Creek Estates Area. If such a fire were to get out of control, and given the spotty history of the FS’s wildfire management history including Thompson Ridge, Los Conches, Hermits Peak et-al, it is of deep concern for those (who currently are aware of) the proposed fire areas and where homes are located.

The proposed burn area is in the bottom of a canyon area setting up for various weather factors and heat dome conditions that could cause unspecified unintended consequences.

This is a far more concerning aspect given the extreme dry conditions, the relatively close proximity of homes and the undeniable incompetent nature of the US Government’s Wildfire management history, needs to be thoroughly vetted and announced.
