Registration for the Edgewood Summer Reading Program Opens

Registration opens May 23 for the Edgewood Community Library’s Summer Reading Program.

The program runs from June 1-July 31 and will engage participants in reading challenges and library events.

Moriarty Summer Reading Program Kicks Off

Join the action in the Moriarty Community Library’s summer program, which kicks off June 2 with a Field Day at the City Park from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

The event will include a variety of relay races and refreshments.

Thereafter, the library will have regular, free events, with the Builder's Club on Tuesdays, Storytime & Craft on Wednesdays and Teen Night on Thursdays.

Moriarty HS Dance Team Tryouts Coming

Moriarty High School’s dance team, the Mirage, will be conducting varsity tryouts May 15-17.

No experience is necessary for the team, which promotes school spirit and loyalty, helps participants to grow in confidence and self-esteem, develops strength and coordination while encouraging fun and the building of lasting friendships. It is opens to students currently in grades 8-11.

Tryout packets are available in the front office or the athletic office.

BernCo Seeks Input on Animal Adoption

The Bernalillo County Animal Care Services wants to know what would encourage local residents to adopt an animal from the Animal Care and Resource Center.

This survey feedback will be used to identify necessary programs and resources and ensuring they are providing adequate services to the community.

The center is bloated with 312 animals in their care, with 197 animals in the center, 102 in the foster care program, and 13 housed with off-site adoption partners.

Each respondent will receive a voucher for a free microchip for their animal.

The survey can be found at surveymonkey.com/r/JHMN6ZF and it closes May 19 at 5 p.m.

Logo Artists Wanted

With the Sunflower Festival fast approaching, the Manzano Mountain Arts Council is seeking submissions for the T-shirt logo.

Submissions, which are due by May 15, should include line art suitable for screen printing using no more than four to six colors. The logo design should include “Sunflower Festival,” “Mountainair, NM” and “2023.”

The selected artist will receive recognition in the council newsletter, on the council’s website and social media and at the festival.

Edgewood Medicare Meeting Set

Navigating Medicare options can be a dizzying enterprise, but United Healthcare and agent Sarah Denkins aim to push aside the curtain of confusion.

During an hour-long seminar May 20 at 11 a.m. at the Edgewood Community Library, various

Medicare options will be discussed, and it will be followed by an informal question-and-answer period.

Estancia Athletic Updates

There will be a meeting May 18 at 6 p.m. in the main gym for all prospective middle school and high school athletes and their parents. Summer calendars will be reviewed and physical forms will be distributed.

The spring sports banquet has been moved to May 22 at 6 p.m. will be the spring sports banquet in the cafeteria. This is a change as it was moved up a day.

Fiber and Art Gathering

When it comes to fiber and art, it all can be found May 20-21 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Heart of New Mexico Fiber & Gathering at the Wildlife West Nature Park & Rescue Zoo.

Dozens of vendors will be offering a variety of items including aw wool, roving and yarn of natural colors to dyed and hand painted, as well as finished fiber products-crocheted, knitted, woven and felted, hand-crafted fiber tools and loom, dinosaur art, tin Spanish art, goat milk soap, knitting and crochet needles, handmade jewelry, resin keychains, acrylic and oil paintings, coffee mugs, tumblers, glass cutting boards, natural weavings, and lots more-all made by skilled artisans.

Fundraiser Date ChangedBecause of Sunday’s Mother’s Day holiday, the planned fundraising auction for longtime Chili Hills waitress Jodi Van de Valde has been moved back to May 28 at 2 p.m. She has been bed-ridden since December after undergoing several surgeries.

The event will be a silent auction for pies and other desserts.
