After a short hiatus for the summer, the Placitas Artist Series, now in its 37th season, announced their upcoming 2023-2024 concert season. The season opens this September with world-renowned pianist Jon Nakamatsu on September 24. Now in his third decade of touring worldwide, Nakamatsu was catapulted to international attention as the Gold Medalist of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1997.
Rounding out the season are progressive solo guitarist Jiji, several principle orchestral musicians with the New Mexico Philharmonic and chamber music from the Fischer Duo, of whom Norman Fischer is a Grammy-award winning cellist. The duo have held residencies include Singapore, China, and Germany, as well as two tours as Artistic Ambassadors for the USIA to South America and South Africa.
“We can’t be more excited about the list of performers that will be taking the stage starting on September 22,” said Wendy Wilkins, president of PAS. “Our music program committee spent many hours considering a wide range of musicians, both international and local, who are of the caliber our patrons have come to expect and who appreciate the acoustics in our intimate concert venue at Las Placitas Presbyterian Church.” With the outstanding talent coming up, Wilkins recommends securing tickets as soon as possible.
In addition to musical guests, the Placitas Artist Series features a visual artist each month during their concert season. Artwork from a featured visual artist is donated and available for a raffle bid in support of PAS. Placitas-based artist Dianna Shomaker is the featured visual artist for the 2023-2024 season.
All concerts are held at the Las Placitas Presbyterian Church located at 7 Paseo de San Antonio Road, in Placitas. Start time for all concerts is at 3 p.m. The Placitas Artists Series projects are made possible in part by New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
