The city of Rio Rancho announced outdoor watering restrictions on Friday. The restrictions will last until Oct. 31.
The city implemented the restrictions in an effort to curb water waste. Spray irrigation, meaning sprinklers or other devices that propel water through the air, will be prohibited between 11 am - 7 pm to all properties within the city limits or to those utilizing the city's water utility.
Hand watering, water used for dust control, soil compaction, drip irrigation, low-emitting bubblers and watering of containerized plants and plant stock will be permitted.
Those who are not compliant with the water restrictions will be subject to fines. According to the city:
Utility customers with less than a two-inch meter
o First violation-warning notice
o Second violation-$25
o Third violation-$50
o Fourth violation-$75
o Fifth violation-$100
o Sixth violation-$150 fee plus the application of a flow restriction device at the meter.
Utility customers with at least a two-inch meter
o First violation-warning notice
o Second violation-$50
o Third violation-$100
o Fourth violation-$150
o Fifth violation-$200
o Sixth violation-$300 fee plus the application of a flow restriction device at the meter.
The city is urging to report the water waste violation to the City’s Water Conservation Office (505) 896-8737 or Report Rio Rancho (rrnm.gov/report), the City’s service request system.
Permits and variances may be granted by the city for: Repair or maintenance of irrigation systems, establishment of newly landscaped areas, or single-day irrigation needed for the application of chemicals for new landscaping.
