Casa San Ysidro, a historic house museum in Corrales dating back to 1875, has been awarded a grant of $250,000 from the New Mexico Cultural Properties Restoration Fund.

The funding will be used to support crucial roof replacement efforts on the museum’s north and west wings.

This grant is part of nearly $1.2 million distributed to eight New Mexico projects through the Cultural Properties Restoration Fund, a program that saw a 20 percent increase in funding over the previous year.

“This statewide program enables us to support organizations working to preserve New Mexico’s cultural heritage, and we’re thrilled to see it continue to grow in its second year of funding,” said State Historic Preservation Officer Michelle Ensey.

The Cultural Properties Restoration Fund, established in the mid-90s but unfunded for decades, was revitalized thanks to the Land of Enchantment Legacy Fund, signed into law by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in 2023 with additional legislative investments in 2024. It is now one of eight state programs receiving dedicated, annual recurring funds through the Legacy Fund. The grant program allows state agencies and political subdivisions to receive up to $250,000 for eligible historic preservation efforts.

Projects are selected by the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division (NMHPD) with approval from the statewide Cultural Properties Review Committee, based on their scope of work, adherence to preservation standards, the extent of damage or threat to the property, and other factors.

The $250,000 awarded to Casa San Ysidro represents the maximum grant amount available and highlights the urgent need for the roof replacement to protect the historic structure. Funding will be released in a lump sum through a Joint Powers Agreement, and the project has a two-year completion timeframe.
