The 2025 local elections are just around the corner and people who want to run for office should be getting ready to file their candidacy paperwork. The 2025 elections are nonpartisan races that include municipal government, school boards and soil and water conservation districts.

Candidates for most local elections will need to file their paperwork between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26 at their county clerk’s office. The paperwork includes a nominating petition and declaration of candidacy, which can be found online here.

While nominating petitions are not necessarily required by state law, local ordinances may require them. The New Mexico Secretary of State Office encourages candidates to contact their local municipality to determine if they need to file the nominating petitions.

In general, most of the East Mountains municipalities have at-large positions, meaning that the candidates can live in any part of the incorporated municipality. However, potential candidates should verify whether the positions are at-large and should check with the municipality to ensure they live within the incorporated area prior to submitting their candidacy paperwork.
