Sandoval County commissioners to tackle bonds, water, bridges and landfill staffing

Sandoval County commissioners meet Tuesday with decisions on a GO bond presentation, new landfill hires, a Placitas water study bid, and a bridge replacement application.

Sandoval County residents from Placitas to Cuba will see decisions affecting their water supply, road safety and emergency services when commissioners gather Wednesday night in Bernalillo.

The Board of County Commissioners meets at 6 p.m. at the Administrative Building Commission Chambers, 1500 Idalia Road, Building D. County Financial Advisor Rob Burpo of First American Financial Advisors will open the meeting with a presentation on 2026 General Obligation Bond project options and their financial implications for the county.

Among the resolutions on the agenda: commissioners will consider authorizing three new landfill positions to improve operational efficiency and permit compliance at the Sandoval County Landfill, which processes approximately 750 tons of waste per day. They will also weigh authorizing an application to the New Mexico Finance Authority’s Technical Assistance Program to fund a feasibility study on consolidating water systems serving the Placitas and Algodones areas — a process that could bring together 11 to 20 separate public water associations. A third resolution would authorize an application to NMDOT for plan and design funding for the County Road 13/Rio Puerco Bridge, a crossing state inspectors downgraded from a 10-ton to a 4-ton weight limit in 2025 and the only road in or out for residents living above it.

ℙ4 Commissioners will also vote on approving a $1.4 million construction contract with Wizer Electric to complete Fire Station 34 in Cuba ahead of a planned July 1 staffing date, and on a letter of support from District 5 Commissioner Joshua Jones urging New Mexico’s congressional delegation to permanently protect the 106,000-acre Caja del Rio plateau.
