Sandoval County Sheriff Jesse James Casaus, a Democrat barred by term limits from seeking reelection, is backing Republican Victor Rodriguez to succeed him — passing over Democratic nominee John Paul Trujillo in a rare cross-party break from a sitting sheriff.
In a letter of endorsement, Casaus credited his eight years in office with adding deputy positions, launching narcotics and K-9 units, and securing state and federal grant funding. He said the county’s next sheriff needs to build on that record rather than risk it. “Public safety is not a partisan issue,” Casaus wrote, arguing voters should choose experience and leadership over party loyalty.
Rodriguez called the endorsement validation of his approach to the race. “His endorsement is a testament to my commitment to be a sheriff for everyone in Sandoval County,” Rodriguez said, adding that the office needs “leadership that provides progress through energy, experience and education not affiliation.” He said he’s “humbled” by Casaus’ trust in him to lead the office forward.
Democratic Party of Sandoval County Chair Greg Bennett said he couldn’t recall another outgoing Democrat endorsing a Republican for the same office, though he wouldn’t rule out it’s happened before. He argued Casaus’ move tracks with a broader shift. “While Sheriff Casaus may identify as a Democrat, his words and actions do not reflect Democratic values,” Bennett said, pointing to what he described as the sheriff’s past alignment with President Trump and the Republican Party. Trujillo did not respond to a text message seeking comment.
Rodriguez topped a two-way Republican primary over Alvin Miller in June, while Trujillo beat back Democrats Martin Arellano and Jose Gonzales Jr. for his party’s nod. The two face off Nov. 3 for a seat that oversees territory stretching from Rio Rancho to Cuba.
