Placitas artists open their studio doors for free self-guided tour May 8–10

The 29th annual Placitas Studio Tour runs free and self-guided May 8–10 across one of New Mexico's most prestigious studio tours.

Tucked between Albuquerque and Santa Fe at the base of the Sandia Mountains’ northern foothills, Placitas opens 48 artist studios to the public this Mother’s Day weekend for the 29th annual Placitas Studio Tour — free, self-guided and, organizers say, built for collectors.

Sixty-two local artists welcome visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. all three days, May 8–10. Visitors can meet artists in their studios and buy directly from them, giving the tour what organizers describe as a treasure-hunt quality unique among New Mexico studio events.

Studios span the full breadth of the Placitas community, organized into seven color-coded neighborhoods on the tour map and brochure to make it easier to navigate between studios.

The 62 participating artists work across more than a dozen media, including pottery, ceramics, steel, photography, wood, fiber, mixed media, bronze, painting, collage and jewelry. Each year, artists submit work to be chosen for the brochure cover — an honor organizers say is highly competitive. This year’s cover features work by M. Kyle Hollingsworth.

The tour expanded to three days last year to give visitors more time to explore. Only artists who live or maintain a full-time studio in Placitas may participate. The Placitas Studio Tour is a registered domestic nonprofit in New Mexico.

Visitors can preview the tour before it begins — the Placitas Community Library is hosting a free exhibit featuring a piece from each of the 62 participating artists through May 10. All work is for sale.
