Families looking for a weekly dose of New Mexico’s ranching heritage this summer can catch Rodeo Tamaya, a public rodeo series returning to Santa Ana Pueblo every Thursday evening through Aug. 13.
The rodeos run from 7 to 9 p.m. and are open to the public, according to Tamaya Horse Rehab, the nonprofit organizing the series.
All proceeds support THR’s mission to rescue and rehabilitate horses that have been injured, neglected or misunderstood, the nonprofit said. Founder Connie Collis began rescuing horses and teaching lessons from her CWW Feed Store in San Ysidro before the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa invited her, her horses and the program to the Pueblo in 2008, according to THR’s website.
More details
- More than 100 horses have been rescued since THR’s founding in 2012, and The Stables at Tamaya, at the base of Tuyuna Rock on Santa Ana Pueblo, now houses 55 of them along with goats, donkeys, chickens and other animals.
- Volunteers run daily operations, arriving at 5 a.m. to feed and care for the horses before morning and evening trail rides.
- Additional rescued horses remain at Collis’s original CWW Feed Store in San Ysidro.
- Information on trail rides, volunteering and donations is available at tamayahorserehab.com.
