By Kevin Hendricks, The Paper. — Scammers are fishing for Rio Rancho residents’ information by posing as city staff, and city officials want you to check the hook before you bite.
The City of Rio Rancho issued a scam alert Oct. 15, after someone reported a suspicious email that impersonated city staff and requested information about city programs and activities. Other versions of the email may be circulating, the city warned.
The giveaway is the address. Official city emails end in @rrnm.gov, according to the city.
City officials urge residents and businesses to treat unsolicited emails asking for personal information, payments or registration details with suspicion. Don’t click strange links, open unexpected attachments or hand over sensitive information.
Not sure a message is legit? Contact the city directly using phone numbers and email addresses listed on its official website, not the contact information in the suspicious email.
